DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCES
the 44th ANNUAL ALONZO AWARDS

SAN DIEGO – The Downtown San Diego Partnership announces the awardees for the 2006 Alonzo Awards, the organization’s annual event which honors the people, projects and programs that have significantly contributed to the revitalization and renewal of downtown.

More than 500 people are expected to attend the celebration, now in its 44th year, which is being held Thursday, November 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Ballroom of the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.  “Once again, it is time for us to salute the people and projects that have contributed significantly to the betterment of downtown San Diego over the past year,” said Barbara Warden, President of the Downtown San Diego Partnership.

The awardees for the 2006 Alonzo Awards, by category, are:

Founders Award – Malin Burnham

An ardent champion of Downtown, Malin Burnham’s leadership in the civic arena go back to his co-founding of San Diegans Inc. in 1958 (San Diegans Inc. and Central City Association were the two parent organizations of the Downtown Partnership.) Notably, in 1963, San Diegans Inc. raised the money needed to save the fledging Civic Center Complex development, and he hasn’t slowed down since.  Malin has also been a mentor to hundreds of current and former Burnham & Co. employees who started their careers with him.

Humanitarian Award – Sister RayMonda DuVall

Sister RayMonda is being recognized with the Humanitarian Award for her hard work, commitment and compassion to our San Diego neighbors in need through facilities such as the House of Hope, Rachel’s House, La Posada de Guadalupe, and the newest addition to downtown, the Leah Residence.

Alonzo Award - Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is being recognized with the Alonzo Award for the incredible success of their $52 million historic restoration of the 1910 landmark, the US Grant, which now shines as a centerpiece of Downtown.

Alonzo Award – Hotel Occidental

Hotel occidental is being recognized with an Alonzo Awards for its excellence in service and affordable accommodations to the San Diego traveler, and for their dramatic revitalization of a dilapidated and crime-ridden 1923 building situated at one of Downtown’s main entry ways.

Alonzo Award – Pam Hamilton

Pam Hamilton is being recognized with an Alonzo Award for her years of dedicated service as the President and Vice President of CCDC.

President’s Award – Jim Dawe

Despite his many professional obligations as a partner and shareholder of a busy law firm, Jim continues to give tirelessly of himself to civic affairs.  Already well known as “Mr. Library” for his local, statewide and national efforts on behalf of community libraries, Jim’s steady and unassuming leadership as co-chair (and ultimately, chair) of the Downtown Community Plan Update Steering Committee was instrumental in getting that process across the finish line earlier this year.

Chairman’s Award – Tom Anglewicz

Tom Anglewicz has chaired the Partnership’s Urban Design Committee for more than five years.  Under his leadership, the Partnership has successfully advocated the committee’s well-articulated positions on such complex issues as Ballpark Village; Pacific Gateway; the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan, and the C Street Master Plan.

The Downtown San Diego Partnership is a leading advocate for the economic growth and revitalization of downtown.  The Partnership works closely with regional business organizations and government agencies to identify needs, develop strategies, shape public policy and implement programs that strengthen the business climate and quality of life in downtown San Diego.  The phone number is (619) 234-0201, and the website is www.downtownsandiego.org.
